Marcus Casadei @markliterally #Scriptchat Transcript May 15th Talking New Landscape for Screenwriters

Mark Casadei @markliterally rocked the chat tonight talking about the new landscape of Hollywood & how to get your work noticed. Enjoy! @jeannevb

  1. Big shout out to @jeannevb for always working her tail off at scriptmag! #scriptchat
  2. To all the creative/artists out there, thank you for making this world a little less crazy! #artistsrule #scriptchat
  3. I order a book from Amazon Saturday before yesterday. I was supposed to arrive on Friday. It's now not coming until Tuesday. #scriptchat
  4. So first, how is everyone doing on their goals/projects and where do you see yourselves later in the year goal wise? #scriptchat
  5. @markliterally I feel like I've lost pace in the last few days. But I'm trying to get energized #scriptchat
  6. I"m assuming Hollywood realizes all screenwriters are GODS! #scriptchat
  7. @annaliterally and I started out creating a feature in Alaska, out of all places! #scriptchat
  8. @markliterally Ever since Prince died, I kept thinking "I want to be that prolific." #scriptchat
  9. @markliterally #scriptchat Write now I'm focussing on rewrites. Later on when I get tired I'll start the marketing
  10. Well, think of this, there are over 2K scripts floating in Hollywood and only 25 specs have been bought today! #scriptchat
  11. @markliterally can you give our writers a peek inside what execs are looking for these days in terms of a writer? #scriptchat
  12. Wow, only 25 setup and it's mid-May? Does that say more about the scripts or the studios? #scriptchat
  13. @jeannevb More execs I come across as manager are looking for talent across the board. They have other talents besides writing? #scriptchat
  14. @SeatownCraig More about the studios, BIG studios are way harder to break into, Look for "first-look" studios who have deals #scriptchat
  15. If you look at the landscape, larger studios only work with what they or who they know. #scriptchat
  16. @SeatownCraig #scriptchat the studios. they have franchisitis. It's been a terrible year for spec sales.
  17. However, smaller studios with first-look deals with larger studios are more open to new writers. Willing to take a chance! #scriptchat
  18. @jgsarantinos @SeatownCraig "He has franchisitis. And it's spreading. If we don't treat now, he'll have shared universoriosis." #scriptchat
  19. You must do your research into the studios and don't blindly pitch your screenplay. Strategize! #scriptchat
  20. @markliterally is it harder to get something into the hands of those at first-look studios without having representation? #scriptchat
  21. Go Into The Story | Reader Question: What exactly is a "spec script"?: A question from Daley Prod...  http://bit.ly/1V4LmFq  #Scriptchat
  22. Go Into The Story | Reader Question: What exactly is a "spec script"?: A question from Daley Prod...  http://bit.ly/1V4LmFq  #Scriptchat
  23. @AishaBOOM Not as hard as you think. Network. We actually got in during a cold call. But, that is a 50/50 shot! #scriptchat
  24. Problem is, big studios are tired of losing money, notice the tent pole movies over and over. However, INDIES are on the rise. #scriptchat
  25. Don't be afraid to write/produce/shoot your own short. More and more smaller studios are taking notice of people who do! #scriptchat
  26. @markliterally #scriptchat i read an article recently that box office is increasing due to ticket prices more than cinema goers
  27. @jgsarantinos True, a lot of the business of cinema is getting boring since the dawn of streaming! #scriptchat
  28. @markliterally And what's your opinion of web series in general (indies, mainly)? #scriptchat
  29. @jgsarantinos Trailers for proof of concept are spot on! We did that for #murderhill and it got us talent attached! #scriptchat
  30. @filmwritr4 No but we are working an independent sci-fi web series soon! Good route to go as well. #scriptchat
  31. @markliterally Is there a good resource showing which smaller studios work with the larger companies...or just manual searching? #scriptchat
  32. Q: Can you talk briefly about getting Murder Hill from the writing stage to the producing stage? #scriptchat
  33. The great thing about shooting your short, doesn't matter if it's 5min or 30min, is it shows your talent up front to everyone! #scriptchat
  34. @markliterally Q: What are some of the best ways to promote a short film/web series, besides the usual spots (Youtube, Vimeo)? #scriptchat
  35. @SeatownCraig @markliterally #scriptchat maybe subscribe to services with producers looking for scripts? maybe craigslist and stage32?
  36. @SarahAlexis4 It's their out-of-box thinking. I love stories on an emotional level, horror, comedy, thriller, drama. #scriptchat
  37. @markliterally #scriptchat and that you have an idea of the production process. ur less likely to write a period piece set on Pluto in 3455
  38. Why do I get the feeling no matter what I do I'm in competition have all four of my limbs tied together? #scriptchat
  39. (2/2) from there it developed into a short then a feature! #scriptchat
  40. @markliterally on the same page - literally. Love emotionally charged stories with fully developed characters. #scriptchat
  41. @Al_1701 You know what you do when you're in that situation? Head butt. Always a way. #scriptchat
  42. @SarahAlexis4 A huge deal, it brings you into focus, makes you realize the process of filmmaking and tones your writing! #scriptchat
  43. @blueneumann I have no money, and even getting a steady day job has been a losing battle. #scriptchat
  44. @jgsarantinos I see to often where scripts fall flat on that. Don't let your character traits die out. Bring them to the end! #scriptchat
  45. @jeannevb @markliterally Crap, I lost track of time! Still getting kids in bed. :/ Looking forward to transcript! Have a great #scriptchat!
  46. @markliterally Q: When doing a rewrite, and when you feel stuck, any strategies you recommend on coming up with solutions? #scriptchat
  47. @Al_1701 @blueneumann Use anything, your phone, a camera from Walmart. Just shoot!! Even for yourself. You will learn a lot! #scriptchat
  48. @markliterally @Al_1701 Three cool lenses for the iPhone, ten bucks on the Digg Store. Just FYI #scriptchat
  49. @filmwritr4 When we get stuck, we break, heck, I even take a quick shower, for some reason that damn place is magical for ideas! #scriptchat
  50. @jgsarantinos @markliterally @Al_1701 Definitely be a unique voice if I can't get anyone else in front of the camera. #scriptchat
  51. @ZotBakingCo You can be a writer, but understand you are competing against 1000's. What can you do to make yourself stand out? #scriptchat
  52. @markliterally apologies! My laptop decided to lock up. Luckily you're a good talker. :) #scriptchat
  53. @SarahAlexis4 It is extremely important to network! I hate when people say you have to be in LA, that's a bunch of BS. #scriptchat
  54. It is a lot of who you know. Never underestimate anyone in this business and ALWAYS have your 30sec elevator pitch ready! #scriptchat
  55. .@markliterally & @annaliterally's new feature MURDER HILL is starring @Tomproctor (Guardians of Galaxy) & Marylin Ghigliotti! #scriptchat
  56. I'm in Nashville. Now we don't even have the show Nashville. #scriptchat
  57. .@markliterally @ZotBakingCo I made a short on my phone and edited it. I learned how to write a better script. #scriptchat
  58. @blueneumann you're in Nashville? I was just there! How did I miss that you lived there? #scriptchat
  59. @jeannevb I'm so annoyed that I missed you! My car broke down right after the Film Fest so I couldn't do the writer thing #scriptchat
  60. @blueneumann Nashville is a growing place for productions. Look at getting on set as an intern or other position. #scriptchat
  61. Those are great events! MT @jgsarantinos: @markliterally @SarahAlexis4 #scriptchat Blacklist have monthly mixers in a host of cities.
  62. @jeannevb I know. But I still got to meet tons of interesting filmmakers. #scriptchat
  63. @markliterally as a writer, a manager & a filmmaker, what's the 1 thing you wish you knew when you started? #scriptchat
  64. I wish I had the dexterity to draw. Animation is more my forte in terms of writing. However, I suck at drawing. #scriptchat
  65. Always look for film festivals in your area and local events. Don't be afraid to volunteer. I did on one film, met @Tomproctor. #scriptchat
  66. @Al_1701 I'm great at drawing, I just don't do it quick enough to be able to do comics (that was my original career choice) #scriptchat
  67. @jeannevb The landscape of marketing! It is critical how you sell yourself as a writer/producer. Also, the magic of wine. :) #scriptchat
  68. @Al_1701 I started writing because I needed stuff to draw. The writing went much better than the drawing. #scriptchat
  69. @blueneumann I know some people who can animate. We have been working on a short about a shark looking for fish. #scriptchat
  70. #scriptchat How do we get our screenplays to awesome monkey pro? That's what I want to know. @markliterally
  71. Assuming we can get off the dime and actually start storyboarding. #scriptchat
  72. You also have to keep in mind YOU are your biggest advocate. You will always push harder than a manger/agent will. #scriptchat
  73. @Al_1701 I storyboarded a flick, it was a bit boring to do just b/c the writing was locked. It's more fun when it's collaborative #scriptchat
  74. Once the script is complete, most people stop there and just write another one. Hoping it will get picked up somewhere. #scriptchat
  75. @Al_1701 When you're helping discover the look of the movie, interpreting a story visually, when you're solving a problem? Great #scriptchat
  76. @Al_1701 When it's just following instructions, it's like being an accountant without doing math. #scriptchat
  77. However, the other 1000+ people are pushing, networking, pushing, networking. Don't stop at "THE END". #scriptchat
  78. @blueneumann Why the writer should be involved in the storyboarding process, so they can help work in possible changes. #scriptchat
  79. @Al_1701 Exactly! It's part of the storytelling. But that just wasn't an option for the flick, the budget was just too low. #scriptchat
  80. I saw a fan animation that was jumbled mess because they basically threw out the script and let everyone put in their own stuff. #scriptchat
  81. @Al_1701 @blueneumann I usually let the director take charge of that first. I want to see his vision of the film. #scriptchat
  82. #scriptchat What's the next great networking opportunity coming up? Austin?
  83. @markliterally @blueneumann The director should take the lead, but the writer could help smooth out changes made. #scriptchat
  84. People always forget that this is a BUSINESS. Designed to make money. You almost have to approach your script as a small biz. #scriptchat
  85. @markliterally Q: Based on your experience, what rewrite strategies work best for you? Which would you recommend? #scriptchat
  86. @filmwritr4 Listen to the feedback. What are the re-writes? Play the game but don't sacrifice the story-line! #scriptchat
  87. I noticed in the 'Deadpool' opening credits the writers listed as "the real heroes" - what's the level of respect in Hollywood? #scriptchat
  88. Approach your pitch on how it will make the studio money? #scriptchat
  89. We threw away a chance at a manager one time because they wanted us to destroy the main points of the story. We just couldn't. #scriptchat
  90. @markliterally That's exactly what my instructor told me #scriptchat Approach ur script as a small biz
  91. @SeatownCraig It varies, everyone knows how important they are but not a lot of people will ever recognize that. #scriptchat
  92. You all have the power to do this! The only one holding you back is the reflection in the mirror! NETWORK! get to know everyone #scriptchat
  93. We landed a great actor on one script who then showed it to others. It had a ripple effect, always take a chance to meet people! #scriptchat
  94. @jeannevb Network at film festival, Twitter, Facebook, also check out LOCAL filmmakers facebook groups. Almost every city has 1. #scriptchat
  95. @SarahAlexis4 Communication by FAR!!! Managers our horrible at it. Never be afraid to call them on it. Be honest! They work 4 U. #scriptchat
  96. I am a good writer. I am a vital asset to studio everywhere. They just don't know I even exist. #scriptchat
  97. @Al_1701 Make yourself impossible to ignore! Prove you're a good writer, get those scripts out there! #scriptchat
  98. @writeranthonydp @fitbit Sleeping burns over 300 calories, so I bet writing burns at least that...maybe more. #scriptchat
  99. Set a goal of a 5min short. 2 actors to show you can write good dialog. Minimal scenes. Show your dialog skills! #scriptchat
  100. Is something like submitting to the Blacklist a good start, or is that too passive - waiting to be noticed? #scriptchat
  101. Here's how prolific I want to be: I want to do a script just to see if it can get read on the Black List podcast #scriptchat
  102. @SeatownCraig It's not bad but people just stop there. Never stop. Build a fan base, show the world you will never give up! #scriptchat
  103. @Al_1701 You and I both! I need to hunker down and do some, like, insane high intensity writing #scriptchat
  104. Submitting your work (whether to the BL or elsewhere) isn't sitting around. It's taking action to get noticed @SeatownCraig #scriptchat
  105. @Al_1701 Like carb up, hunker down, have zen and adrenaline music playing and hammer out all my stray ideas #scriptchat
  106. Most readers won't even waste their time if the first ten don't read well. #scriptchat
  107. @Al_1701 I got two or three pilots that I should freakin' power through #scriptchat
  108. Nose and throat feeling like their on fire is damn distracting. #scriptchat
  109. @markliterally Really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my questions, and to all of ours! Thanks so much! #scriptchat
  110. Take @jeannevb for example. #slaverybyanothername is inspiring to watch as a writer and never gives up no matter what! #scriptchat
  111. @Al_1701 :( I'm sorry David. I hope you feel better soon. I hate colds. #scriptchat
  112. @Al_1701 Write a script about a man turning intoa fire-breathing dragon. Turn your sickness into inspiration! #scriptchat
  113. @markliterally @jeannevb Thanks so much Jeanne for hosting this chat, and for having Mark on! #scriptchat
  114. Next week we have @BigBigIdeas as our guest talking theme, structure, outlining #scriptchat
  115. @filmwritr4 Thanks! Sorry I can't get to all but please feel free to ask me anytime on twitter! #scriptchat
  116. Thank you for a great #scriptchat. I appreciate all the information! And, all your time and effort. #scriptchat
  117. Why does the time always fly during these sessions? It's like being in a time warp. Thank you, @markliterally #scriptchat
  118. Network offline as well! Support others work, stay tuned into the Hollywood pulse, read articles, pay attention to the BIZ! #scriptchat
  119. Pitch to the smaller prod companies who have open slates for production. Pitch only projects they want to make! #scriptchat
  120. @Al_1701 Okay dude, let's agree now we'll both have something done next week that we've been putting off. Deal? #scriptchat
  121. Thank you so much @markliterally! I'll grab the transcript now - #FF Mark & his bride/writing partner @annaliterally. #scriptchat
  122. @markliterally Agreed. I get into the action ASAP! Don't mess around with too much exposition... #scriptchat
  123. @AB2screenwriter It's extremely important to get the dialog first, mastered! I don't care about people's exposition. #scriptchat
  124. Thank you all for having me tonight, I wish you all the best in your writing/film making goals! #writeon #scriptchat
